Plastic, plastic bags and rubbish - bah humbug?

Anyone can be forgiven for suffering from re-cycling fatigue, and getting fed-up of reading how we can all 'save' the environment let alone the planet.

Now, please don't think I'm one of the Victor Meldrew types who complains about everything and anything, I'm not - it's just sometimes I think the media does more damage jumping on bandwagons (to sell more copy), and thrusting this in our faces all the time - when really we should have the hard facts and not be emotionally blackmailed.

HOWEVER, recently having seen the reports on how plastic bags are killing and affecting wildlife globally I must admit to feeling very emotional about it all...

If you haven't yet read about what's happening (where have you been?) - just read this short article (and follow the links therein) http://tinyurl.com/2pspz5

On top of this, we can see the affects in action on our front doorstep!

Take a look at the following photographs, this young and beautiful Red Deer stag has got himself tangled in a old plastic feed bag.

He's managing very well, and we're all keeping an eye on him, as much as we can to ensure he doesn't get himself into trouble. As it's nearly Spring his antlers will drop soon, so, fingers crossed, the plastic will drop off at the same time.

This is just one small example - at least this beast has a good chance of surviving, unlike the many dolphins, turtles and birds who have already perished.

And, it's not just bags which are a danger to our wildlife - have a look at this very sad story from the Shetlands - a minke whale strangled by rubbish.... http://tinyurl.com/2z4vsk

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions... bah humbug? I don't think so....

FACT:
Plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photodegrade—breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food chain when animals accidentally ingest.....

I saw this stag outside our cafe, and was furious that no one had done anything about it.I immediately reported it to the SSPCA,I think that those responsible should be shot for leaving feed bags lying about, how ignorant,or just plain lazy are these people?

As pointed out in my article, there are many people in the village 'looking out' for this stag. Our local deer management experts were also watching him. He visits our garden every night and we've seen him during daylight hours, and he looks extremely fit and healthy. He's not suffered at all, and the bag has just been an inconvenience to him. Be assured that no-one in this community would allow any animal, wild or otherwise, suffer in front of our eyes.
